While this was a required textbook for a college class, it is by far one of my favorite texts. Then again, I do love most anything dealing with criminal justice and criminal investigation.

This text covers, as it states, the art and science of criminal investigation in six parts:

#1.) Fundamentals of Criminal Investigation
#2.) The Investigative Process
#3.) Interpersonal Violence
#4.) Property Crimes
#5.) Vice Crimes and Related Offenses
#6.) Prosecution

#1.) Fundamentals of Criminal Investigation - this section covers the myths of crime solving and the investigative process; modern developments in science; recent research in criminal investigation; defining objectives of criminal investigations; understanding the types of investigations; identifying desirable characteristics of investigators; understanding the preliminary investigation; realizing the significance of crime scene evidence; identifying the duties of the first responder; dealing with witnesses at the scene; understanding procedures to protect the crime scene; and understanding follow-up investigation procedures.

#2.) The Investigative Process - the section covers a broad range of subjects starting with crime scene processing: understanding the importance of field notes, role and importance of written police reports, describing the advantages/disadvantages of crime scene photography, understanding the various techniques of crime scene sketching, and the differences between rough and finished crime scene sketches.

Moving into the section the student also gains insight into the search and seizure process: legal guidelines of searching for evidence, U.S Supreme Court precedents relating to police searches, understanding warrantless searches, structuring a search warrant, methods of executing the warrant, various search techniques, and the importance of marking and preserving physical evidence.

The student also learns about the identification of criminal suspects: understanding the fundamentals of fingerprint science including the different types of prints, significance of DNA analysis in the investigative process, importance of handwriting samples, and legalities of police lineups in suspect identification.

The section also covers criminal intelligence functions, undercover and surveillance operations, making arrests, interrogations and interviews, along with developing and managing informants.

#3.) Interpersonal Violence covers crimes against the person more commonly known as: wrongful death, robbery, assault, stalking, domestic violence, elderly abuse, sexual assault, missing and abducted persons, child abuse and neglect.

#4.) Property Crimes deals with burglary, forgery, fraud, embezzlement, shoplifting, vehicle thefts, arson, and bombings.

#5.) Vice Crimes and Related Offenses covers drug crimes, money laundering, and computer crimes.

Finally,

#6.) Prosecution - this section is an introduction to the court system covering: pre-trial procedures, how the criminal trial operates, characteristics of the jury, function of the opening and closing statements, differences in direct and cross examinations, showing how an investigator prepares for court, understanding techniques used by the defense to discredit an investigator's testimony, learning the importance of good courtroom behavior, and understanding the role of the expert witness.

For the student who isn't interested in this subject, this book could prove overwhelming.

This book has remained at my side as an invaluable reference since I enjoy its presentation and the information contained inside.
