James Grierson MacGregor (1905–1989)

An interesting biography of Peter Fidler. This book is written in the 1960s by an Anglo-Canadian, and thus quite predominantly framed within the sociopolitical context of 1960s English Canada. This is not a weakness, rather a noticeable stylistic difference, and important for historians and historiography at large. The book does, however, have a strong noticeable weakness: a lack of citations. The author indicates that the journal entries are from the archives - but he does not cite them, so that the reader might consult the primary sources as well. The lack of a bibliography means that for me I can only give it a maximum of 3 stars. The work succeeded in its aim: a biography of Peter Fidler, but without citations, it does not do so well in an oustanding manner, even for its time.… (meer)
