John Norman MacLean (b. 1943) is an American author and journalist, known for his writing about wildland firefighting. MacLean holds a bachelor's degree from Shimer College, a Great Books college in Chicago, and was a Nieman Fellow in Journalism at Harvard University. He worked for the City News Bureau and the Chicago Tribune for many years before leaving the Tribune to work on his first book, Fire on the Mountain, in 1995. He has published numerous books since then, including Young Men and Fire, Fire and Ashes, and The Thirtymile Fire. (from Shimer College Wiki)

Some interesting insights on the book "A River Run's Through It" by the son's author.

John N. Maclean is the go to author for writing about wildfires in which firefighters have lost their lives. Its a family tradition, as his father, Norman, wrote the best selling Young Men and Fire. John has written a number of books in this genre, with River of Fire being his latest. Not his best, as I would recommend Fire on the Mountain instead. River of Fire is best for wildland fire professionals.

"Home Waters" is a wonderful story about fly fishing, family and life. This novel brought back wonderful memories of my own childhood: long car rides, fishing and spending time with family. The writing style is easy to read. Highly recommend!

Written by Norman Mclean's son (A River Runs Through It), the book is a warm reflection on his father's legacy, the mystery of his uncle, Paul's, death, and the impact of the family's mountain cabin, a legacy of fly fishing, and the impact of his father's beloved book and the resulting movie.
