Korte biografie
Sir Philip Montefiore Magnus-Allcroft, 2nd Baronet, was the son of Laurie Magnus and Dora Spielmann, and the grandson of Conservative politician and MP Sir Philip Magnus and Lady Katie Magnus. His maternal grandparents were Sir Isidore Spielmann and Emily Sebag-Montefiore. He succeeded to the title of 2nd Baronet Magnus on the death of both his father and his grandfather in 1933. During World War II, he was an officer in the Royal Artillery and Army Intelligence Corps, rising to the rank of major. In 1943, he married Jewell Allcroft, and in 1951 added the name of Allcroft to his own by deed poll. He was the biographer of Sir Walter Raleigh, King Edward VII, William Gladstone, Edmund Burke, and other historical figures. In later years, he served as a Justice of the Peace as well as a number of other civic and volunteer positions, including Shropshire county councillor, chairman of the Governors of Attingham College, and trustee of the National Portrait Gallery.

I got this book as an introduction to William Gladstone because of all the negative comments i have read about Roy Jenkin’s work. I would have to say that I was not disappointed to recommend this as a good alternative (although i still plan to read Roy Jenkin’s work later on) as it covers all the important events in the Gladstone life. Although I would have wanted better explanation and more background information on some topics(such as international affairs, relationship with Disraeli, economic policies etc) so as to elimate the need to go to wikipedia, I still finished this book knowing that I have learned new things that I didn’t know before. For that and for the author’s ability to tell the Gladstone’s story without it becoming dry and boring(unlike what I have heard about Roy Jenkin’s book), i give it four stars.… (meer)

This biography is, I believe, the first to make (very effective) use of G's correspondence. It is happily supplemented by the Jenkins biography, some 40 years later, which is the first to make use of G's diaries.

865 King Edward the Seventh, by Philip Magnus (read 27 Aug 1966) Magnus does a workmanlike job on the biographies he does, and this book is no exception. But it is pretty much the 'official' biography, so does not delve too deeply, as I remember it, into the more scandalous aspects of its subject.

1087 Kitchener: Portrait of an Imperialist, by Philip Magnus (read 17 Oct 1970) This is an excellent biography, even though Kitchener's life had its dull moments. In fact, after Khartoum his life went downhill. He was born in County Kerry, Ireland, June 24, 1850, the son of a former British officer who moved to Ireland in 1849. He surveyed in Palestine and Cyprus. He won the battle of Khartoum Sept 2, 1898. On June 5, 1916, at 7:40 P.M. the ship he was on struck a mine and he drowned. Worthwhile book.… (meer)
