This is a book that matters. Written by a geophysicist, I learned not only about facts that relate to global warming but also the political machinations that are stymying the efforts to decarbonize industry and transportation.

A personal take on the state of climate science versus society in the USA. A bit wordy and repetitive, but still a good source of info on disinformation, doom floggers, and inactivists.

Using detailed examples, Michael Mann pulls on decades of experience to highlight how those interested in maintaining the fossil fuel status quo, have used misinformation and misdirection to prevent the path to the rapid change needed to prevent a climate crisis.

Using playbooks from the tobacco industry and others, even individual action and carbon footprints were introduced by the oil industry to deflect attention from their massive contribution to greenhouse gas build up and climate change.

He explains the need to combine individual action and systemic change, and highlights that shouting matches over diet and travel choices only lead to a divided community (and a win for fossil fuel interests).

Crucially, the book outlines Michael's reasons for cautious optimism and a 4 point battle plan that - despite the actions of the deniers and doomsayers - gives us hope.

A must read for anyone looking to understand the political and economic challenges to tackling the climate crisis and what is required to win this climate war.

Crucial work on the politics of communication about climate change, as well as on why it is important to remain hopeful.
