Abby bought a house that is haunted by spirits with a dark past. Jordan comes back into town to visit said house, since that was the house his parents lived in. A brutal murder occurred them, leaving Jordan alone and the house totally haunted. Jordan begins to Fall for Abby, mirroring the antics that happened in the house, yet is still with his powerful lawyer girlfriend Robin. As history repeats itself and secrets are revealed, chaos ensues.
It's hard to put my finger on it, because this book had all the bits and pieces there to make a great book. I honestly think it was the writing style that got me. The plot was dramatic and had lots going on, but I still couldn't keep focused on it. The story mirroring itself was also pretty unique, and had me very curious about what was going to happen. With all the complexity, I really should have loved this story.
I'm not one for cheating story lines, so I think that was a bit part of why I wasn't enjoying this book. Jordan's cheating ways put me off. That's not a hit against the book, but it's just a personal faux pas for when I'm reading. Again, reader beware! Research your books before you read them. Some tropes are not meant for everyone!
I was a little let down with the fantasy portion. I'm not sure what I was expecting completely, but I thought the fantasy element with the ghosts would be a bigger part. This book is far more contemporary romance and drama than fantasy. Reader beware!
Overall, this book is a great novel but just not for me as a reader. I can totally appreciate that J.D. Mason is a master story teller though! There are lots of readers who will absolutely love this story!
Three out of five stars.
I received this book for free through Goodreads First Reads.
