Worlds of Reference door Tom McArthur
Ho comprato questo libro verso la metà degli anni ottanta, quando non c'erano ancora la Rete, i telefonini, i social. Dalla comunicazione orale a quella satellitare e in "bits & bytes", certo l'uomo ne ha fatta strada. Mi domando se siamo noi uomini a fare comunicazione oppure è questa a fare noi. Ho letto una frase di quel filosofo geniale che è Manlio Sgalambro che dice: "La scienza non può parlare dell'uomo se non disperdendolo nell'universo. Il cervello dell'uomo non è umano." Leggendo il percorso che la scienza degli uomini ha fatto nel corso dei secoli, utilizzando gli strumenti e i modi più diversi, ci si rende conto di quanto importante e misteriosa sia ancora oggi la conoscenza di dove tutto questo ha origine. Chiamatelo cervello o mente, ogni cosa inizia e finisce in questo luogo: la nostra scatola cranica. Mi rendo conto che non sto parlando di quanto è scritto in questo libro. Il fatto è che tutto quello che fa comunicazione origina da questa scatola e in questa scatola confluisce. Ho detto "confluisce", non "finisce", perché il pensiero genera altri pensieri, alla stessa maniera in cui un mezzo usato per comunicare genera un altro mezzo. Una catena continua che si distende, ci lega e ci collega, ci illude di liberarci ma allo stesso tempo ci fa suoi prigionieri. Ad essa ci riferiamo, sempre e comunque, senza di essa non potremmo vivere. Non ci rendiamo conto che siamo fatti di materia, ma quello che comunichiamo non è materia, i mezzi che usiamo sono reali e concreti, "reference" è la parola usata in inglese. Non ne possiamo fare a meno. Come non ne possono fare a meno tutti gli strumenti che usiamo, abbiamo usato e continueremo ad usare nei millenni a venire. Ne sono certo. Perché Sgalambro l'ha detto il nostro "cervello non è umano" anche se ci appartiene, come tutti gli strumenti per comunicare.… (meer)

It covers pronunciation, vocabulary, and usage, and also has sections on English vs. American English, and on World English. Informative and well written.
