Yet another installment of Snowpocalypse 2011 Toddler Reading Reviews. This one was kind of cute. I liked a lot of the details -- the great grandmother pirate, and her ghastly demise (swallowed by a giant shrimp); the gold tooth; the family's pirate destiny. The illustrations are colorful and a bit zany. My favorite is the rather scruffy looking dad, with his scraggly (piratical) beard.

This book tells the story of Scarlett wanting to be a pirate like her old folks. Her family has always said do not mention the word pirates because that is not what they are. I love how the author brings a girl into wanting to become a pirate. The gender stereotypes of today are usually boys becoming pirates. This book can enhance a child's imagination and know that you do not have to be a certain gender to be something you want to be.

Don't Mention Pirates is the story of Scarlet Silver and her love for pirates. She is told by her parents not to talk about pirates, but in the end they face the fact that they are all pirates and Scarlet is able to enjoy being who she is without being held back.
