608. Andersonville: A Story of Rebel Military Prisons, by John McElroy (read 14 Feb 1960) My brother-in-law had a great interest in books about the Civil War and World War II, and gave this to me to read. It is not as well-written as MacKinlay Kantor's prize-winning novel which I read a year and a half earlier and I found this a less absorbingly engrossing read than that.

A well written book by a Norhern soldier who survived Andersonville. McElroy's view of the South and southerners is a bit upsetting since my roots are in the South-but I can understand where these feelings came from, since Andersonville was considered the worst of all Southern prisons. This first hand account of Andersonville Prison should be required reading for anyone studying the Civil War.
