He has received several awards for his writing, including the AE Memorial Award in 1952, for the manuscript of "'The Barracks," and British Arts Council awards in 1968, 1970, and 1973. All Will Be Well: A Memoir door John McGahern
This is an exploration of McGahern's childhood in rural Ireland in the 1940's and 50's. He deeply loved his mother who died of cancer when he was still very young. Sent with his siblings to live with his authoritative father in police barracks (his father and mother rarely lived together)the children learn to endure cruelty and unpredictabilty and to rely entirely on each other for their emotional development. McGahern discovered books through the library of a sympathetic local priest, and through his education, gradually breaks free of the extraordinary volatile father who endeavours to control his life and that of his sisters and brother. I've not yet read any other books by McGahern. I will, to experience again his heartfelt, compelling, evocative writing.… (meer)
Beautiful book which evokes an Irish country community over the course of one year. There is no major frame, but a gentle unfolding of characters as they deal with death, Christmas, family relations, the impetus to migration in Irish history. The language, rituals and customs are familiar to one of Irish descent and I found myself transported to this community around the lake.
Again - so layered, so poignant. The character lends such innocence to his story and is yet bereft of the luxury that that should afford him. A careful and honest insight into a certain side of an Irish Catholic boyhood. McGahern approaches subjects and situations that are so human and everyday yet so hard to admit and acknowledge - he is brave in his truthfulness and it is expressed with such compassion. I imagine as I read, his lovely lilting voice and that kind, knowing tone.
Really intimate view into a family home; the ritual of domesticity - the way in which it is at times a saving grace - the threat of sickness and the shadow that looms when it is found out. A simple story full of so much basic human emotion that it lends layers to the darkest depths.
