Joe McGinniss was born on December 9, 1942. He graduated from the College of the Holy Cross in 1964 and worked as a newspaper journalist. He wrote several nonfiction books including The Selling of the President, Going to Extremes, Fatal Vision, The Miracle of Castel di Sangro and The Rogue: toon meer Searching for the Real Sarah Palin. Joe McGinniss, whose Fatal Vision was a masterpiece of true crime writing, has written a compulsively readable book about the phenomenon known as Sarah Palin and about the phenomenal shift between admiring statesmen (and women) and worshiping at the altar of personality, where "presidential" no longer means anything than being a good drinking buddy. None of Palin's acolytes will like this book, but for those of us who only knew her as a face and a name and a public whirlwind, this is an extraordinary and revelatory work, and a real page-turner, at that.… (meer)
A fascinating portrait of Alaska in the mid 1970's, not covering the Alaskan pipeline boom so much as focusing on individual stories of how the pipeline boom changed their lives. The book is a compilation, so if you only read a chapter or two, I would recommend the chapters on the Brooks Range, Nome, and Barrow.
This story exemplifies the saying "money can't buy you happiness". So many sad, tragic lives in this book. I realize that there are two sides to every story, but this book left me with a lot of questions about motives and true actions of many of the main players. Did not like the audio reader much, took me awhile to get used to the tone, but it was an easy (if not light) book to listen to while walking the dog.

What it comes down to is this (and I can't figure out how MacDonald's supporters downplay this): the guy was a Green Beret. His family was brutally slaughtered and he had minor wounds. Was he a complete and utter wimp who was physically unable to protect his wife and children (something I can't believe) or was he himself guilty of the killings? This book gives good background on the evidence used to indict and convict the pathological, narcissistic nobody, Jeffrey MacDonald.… (meer)
