I was fortunate enough to visit the Glasgow School of Art before it burned down. Lovely and light-filled, with beautiful decorative flourishes. Mackintosh seems to have been speaking the same architectural language as Frank Lloyd Wright, although I don't think either of them knew about the other. His art and architecture are truly stunning, and this book does a remarkable job of showcasing them, as well as details about his life and career.

The fourth (and for now the last) of Phaidon's Architecture 3s that I own focuses on "British High-Tech," less a movement than a lasting way of designing and detailing buildings that exposes services and structure and accentuates connections between parts. Just about any building by Norman Foster and Richard Rogers would fit this collection, and although James Stirling's buildings eventually shifted in the PoMo direction, the Leicester University Engineering Building (1963) is a logical choice, a breakwater in High-Tech. Likewise with Rogers' Lloyd's Building (1986), arguably the best building in this vein (at least of those in the UK). Other Foster buildings would have worked well here (Hongkong and Shanghai Bank, Stansted Airport, Sainsbury Centre), though I'm more than happy to learn more about the Willis Faber Dumas Building (1975). All this talk of selection is moot though, sine the Architecture 3s repackage slim case studies previously published by Phaidon; the collections are about finding themes that a trio of previously published buildings fit into, rather than finding the ideal buildings that would fit the themes.

The reason for the purchase was Lloyd's Building, which was part of a book I wrote earlier this year. When writing about particular buildings, case studies are my favorite resources, since the descriptions, photos and drawings delve more deeply into their subjects than other books. This one is solid, though I would have like more drawings, given the complexity of the design and its various parts. One of these days I'll delve into the other two buildings, though I'm confident that they will meet the high standards of their companion.

A small, gift book illustrating Charles Rennie Mackintosh's work - Glasgow School of Art, architecture, and interior design. Unfortunately, Macintosh's popularity and reputation suffered a decline and he died nearly penniless. His work in many cases is lost but this book is able to illustrate some of his work and is a delight to the eye.
