James McKinley was born on December 8, 1935 in Omaha, Nebraska. He received degrees in journalism and psychology from the University of Missouri-Columbia and a doctorate in literature at the University of Missouri. After serving in the U.S. Army, he worked in advertising for Procter and Gamble in toon meer Cincinnati and later for Young and Rubicam in New York. In 1970, he taught English and creative writing at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. In 1985, he became editor of New Letters, the quarterly literary magazine published by UMKC. He held this position for 17 years. He was the author of both fiction and nonfiction books including Acts of Love, Who Taught Me to Swim, and Assassination in America. He also wrote articles for several magazines including Playboy and Esquire. In 1989, he agreed to interview Kansas City serial killer Bob Berdella on public television. He died after a short illness on March 28, 2015 at the age of 79. (Bowker Author Biography) toon minder
