T. D. McKinney was probably born with eclectic tastes. Growing up on the American Gulf Coast, she gained a great appreciation for all things Southern and a fascination with what the community around her termed the "War of Northern Aggression." Frequent trips to New Orleans to visit relatives instilled an early love for that city and for the Cajun culture; one of her earliest memories is viewing Mardi Gras parades when she was three years old. She freely admits that at the tender age of six she fell in love with both Barnabus Collins of Dark Shadows' fame and Jonny Quest's scientist-father, Benton Quest. Sherlock Holmes followed soon after as one of the great abiding interests of her life.

These early influences doubtless explain a great deal about the author and her writings. There is very little she doesn't find interesting, whether it's art, music, history, vampires, web design, or forensic science. Everything is there to be explored, investigated, and attempted at least once. This trait often carries over into her writing. She loves exploring characters that are not afraid to take a risk or step outside the constraints of society or family. And if the character doesn't want to take that chance, she likes creating situations that require they do so.

Her two freshman offerings from Amber Quill Press perfectly express her eclectic nature. Dancing In The Dark is a dark romantic fantasy combining her love and life-long study of vampires with the hard reality of criminal profiling. My Secret Yankee (co-authored with Aimée Masion) is an American Civil War historical romance set in Union-occupied New Orleans that explores cultural and class differences and what happens when people from different worlds collide.

T. D. lives in the Dallas-Fort Worth area of north Texas with her husband and young daughter. Artist, author, career woman, web designer, mother, and wife, she manages to keep busy. In her spare time, she shares her husband's interest in collecting swords, vampires, the internet, science fiction, and all things Japanese.

I've missed Holmes and Watson as I haven't read the books or any fanfiction in years, so it was a nice homecoming of sorts for me. The basic characterisations of these characters is close enough to classic Doyle to elicit no complaint with a decent case as the main plot focus. The main issue I had was that, at the very outset, there is no physical relationship between Holmes and Watson but by the first chapter, they are very suddenly thrust into one that felt out of nowhere. Holmes merely asks for a lesson in how to woo including kissing from Watson, and then a mere paragraph later Watson has Holmes up against a tree in a full-on snog. Obviously, those reading this book are mostly here for that very thing but I was hoping for a more natural progression, definitely more angst and second-guessing from Watson. Here, once they start with that (very out-in-public) kiss, they can't keep their hands off each other and that very afternoon, in Chapter 2, Holmes is already on his knees... it just seemed very unexpected for the era and these characters. If this was just some fanfiction on A03 I wouldn't even blink at this, but because the writers went through the trouble of publishing it I expected more polish and thoughtfulness.… (meer)

I enjoyed this even though I guessed the perpetrator of the crime long before the halfway point of the book.
Low/no on page sex scenes.
I've read some reviews that say the voice of Watson was caught quite well, while others have said it was amiss. It's been too long since I have read ACD to form an opinion.

I really loved the stubborness and openness of Shawn. He was such a great character. I admired his ability to not care what anyone else thought and just go for what he wants and thinks is important (which is Alex). Alex is an overall quiet, nervous, and unsure guy. He's always been straight and fears for what could happen to his career if people find out he is in a relationship with Shawn. There is some relationship drama (of course...they are Alpha male FBI agents) but not too much drama where I end up yelling at them throughout the whole book to wake up. I loved the twist that came about halfway into the book and it kept me engaged throughout.… (meer)
