I live in New Orleans and often ride my bike pass the plague recognizing where Homer Plessy attempted to board the train but was rejected. I wanted to know more and find a book that students can read as well. "We as Freemen" was just that book. It details one of the most popular and controversial cases in U.S. history in a light that seems unprecedented. The case set the stage for horrid practices by the government and business owners. Medley discusses details and stories that many history classes seem to omit or forget. He brings it to life. It tells like a narrative that even though you know the outcome, you still continue to read in suspense.

More importantly, it is written for a younger audience. It can even be read by grades as low as 8th. A teacher could definitely use excerpts for their class.
