- A former writer in residence at North Shore Community College and Miami Dade Colleges, and professor of Creative Writing at Bennington and Amherst Colleges, Merullo has been a guest speaker at many literary events and venues and a faculty member at MFA programs and several writers’ conferences. His essays have appeared in numerous publications including The New York Times, Outside Magazine, Yankee Magazine, Newsweek, Boston Globe, Philadelphia Inquirer, Boston Magazine, Reader's Digest, Good Housekeeping, and The Chronicle of Higher Education. His books have been translated into German, Spanish, Portuguese, Korean and Croatian.

I am a fan of this author, but I didn't finish listening to The Delight of Being Ordinary on audio. I see the AudioFile review thinks the narrator didn't do a good job, and recommends reading this one in print. For me, the character who narrates the story here seemed too much like the character who narrates Breakfast with Buddha, Lunch with Buddha, etc., just recast as the cousin of the Pope (Francis) who sneaks away a road trip with the Dalai Lama in Italy in disguise, instead of the brother-in-law of a Buddhist monk who may be an incarnation of the Buddha on a road trip in the U.S. The conversations in the car and over roadside picnics and restaurant dinners and the inner ponderings of the narrator are too simplistic for people who have more than a smattering of knowledge about world religions and too heavy-handed with the message that there are many different ways to lead a spiritual life.
I highly recommend all of the Breakfast with Buddha novels, though, if you're looking for a road-trip novel that is also a journey of self-discovery with spirituality but not overly religious.… (meer)

A fictional account around characters on an exclusive winery in Montepulciano in Tuscany during the final year of the Italian campaign in WW2, 1943. The daughter of the winery has a lover who is one of the vineyard workers and goes off to Sicily to fight with the Axis against the Allied invasion. Some of the workers support the Italian partisans but the vineyard owner supports Mussolini and the Nazis. The author crafts an authentic sounding story about how these lives interact in the unprecedented fall of Mussolini, the Nazis and the approaching Allies.… (meer)
