Alert! Fine new series character is born! This is not Micklebury's first book but it is the first in this series featuring Black, criminal defense attorney, Carol Ann Gibson. Carol Ann and her husband, Al, have a fabulous life under control. They are both crack attorneys in highly successful careers but nearly simultaneously they realize that something is missing. It's time to reevaluate and make some life changes. They both decide to quit their jobs. And the next day, Al is brutally murdered on the street. Carol Ann's life change turns into finding out why. The plot is good but the characters are marvelous. I cannot wait for the second of this series and hope there are many more.… (meer)

Penny Micklebury takes the reader to a multi-generational, interracial story of two families. This novel is different from her mystery series; however it is well-written. Mickelbury tells the Belle City story from two perspectives: Ruth Thatcher, who is black, and Jonas Thatcher, who is white. Mickelbury clearly brings both voices into the story. The characters are well-developed, and the plot is filled with action and drama. I highly recommend this book.

I really liked this book. Very compelling, couldn't put it down! The characters were well fleshed out, with just enough color and surprise to it. Definitely recommend for a weekend read.

I enjoyed this book and found the historical information and the family and race relationships well written and interesting. While I liked the book overall, I found the third section lacking and could have done without it.
