Jo Van Fleet here at her very best, and helped a lot by film maker Robert Ellis Miller, who was specialized in brilliant, intelligent and moving stories directing. This one makes no exception. Van Fleet plays a German woman refugee in Boston after WW2 where she lost her husband, died in a Nazi concentration camp. For this, she receives thirty pieces of silver from the new German government and refuses it, because this is for her, money of shame and dishonor. But surprises are not over for her. A very poignant topic with a superb action, which move audiences. (fonte: Imdb)… (meer)

2021 movie #146. 1968. Alan Arkin plays, Singer, a deaf mute in a small southern town in the '50s. Good adaptation of the Carson McCullers novel. 24-yo Sondra Lock, as the 16-yo girl Singer befriends was nominated for an Oscar in this, her debut.

Although both stories are based on excellent works by the original authors, the derivative scripts are terrible, trite, arch, and stupid. The acting is blah, even by the "name actors" including Temple, who is not shown at her best (no singing or dancing for one thing). She is about 10 or 12 in Madeline, probably 15-17 in Princess.
The sets are cartoonish (on purpose in Madeline) and don't even come up to the standards of a mediocre High School production.
Total waste of time.

Tom Conti is superb as a boozy, womanizing poet, one of those characters you know you shouldn't love, but do anyway. And so does Kelly McGillis, against all reason. The ending is, in every sense of the phrase, poetic justice.
