A great side-by-side comparison of Horatio Gates and John Burgoyne. From upbringing, education, early military careers, through decisions and influence during the initial hostilities between Britain and the American colonies, and ending at the surrender at Saratoga.
This book actually helped to sway my personal opinion of General Gates. The book is concentrated on the two Generals. If offers a brief overview of the main events of the Saratoga campaign, but should not be considered a book on that campaign. It does not do a deep dive into the battles but rather explains them and their outcomes and then focuses on how those outcomes influenced the decisions of the two Generals.
This would be an excellent companion guide to any book focusing on Saratoga. It reads well and alternates between the Generals' stories.
