I wanted The League of Regrettable Superheroes as soon as I saw the cover. I recognized Fantomah (see lower right corner) from her entry in misterkitty.org's stupid comics. The only other cover character I'd seen before was Doll Man, seen punching the 'S' in 'Superheroes'. The book turned out to be as much fun as I'd hoped. Some of the characters sound interesting, but many fall into the 'WHAT were they thinking??' category.

The superheroes and heroines are listed alphabetically within the three parts: the golden age of comics (1938-1949), the silver age (1950-1969), and the modern age.(1970-present). We usually get one image (mostly from a comic cover) and a page of information. I bought some of those silver and modern age regrettable comics in my youth, have a reprint of some Doll Man adventures, Turn Loose Our Death Rays and Kill Them All (which reprints all of the Fantomah adventures, as well as those of other Fletcher Hanks' characters), and the Whitman Invisible Scarlet O'Neil book from the 1940s. I have no trouble believing in the rest of the entries.

Note: If you do read this book, which I recommend you do, the entry for Dracula contains a regrettable pun. Dracula's alias is Aloysius Ulysses Card, or 'Al U. Card' for short. 'Card' is an old-fashioned word for someone who is funny or eccentric/weird, making that 'Al, you card. Feel free to groan. (At least that way, people were likely to conclude that he had a warped sense of humor instead of noticing that he'd spelled 'Dracula' backwards.)… (meer)

I enjoyed it, but not to the heights of a 4 or 5 star book, I'm afraid. Mildly diverting, let's say. And not as interesting as the first one (regrettable superheroes). Apparently it's a lot more humorous having ridiculous superheroes than ridiculous bad guys (it's a ratio thing--so many more villains per hero, you expect a few of them to be scraping bottom).

(Note: 5 stars = amazing, wonderful, 4 = very good book, 3 = decent read, 2 = disappointing, 1 = awful, just awful. I'm fairly good at picking for myself so end up with a lot of 4s).… (meer)

Efter att tidigare ha samlat diverse mestadels bortglömda superhjältar och -skurkar har Jon Morris i The league of regrettable sidekicks kommit till underhuggarna, medhjälparna och husdjuren som i alla fall försökt hjälpa dem: från den minst sagt vidsträckta familjen hjältar som förvandlas av ordet Shazam till T-force, en grupp ungdomar som hjälptes av och hjälpte Mr T.

Även om det finns en hel del minst sagt bisarra skapelser även här (Fatman, som klätt sig i en lampskärm och gardin och slåss med en kvast och vattenpistol fylld av bläck går utanpå det mesta), så tycks snarast de överlag vara aningen nedtonade även i underlighet: även om två barbarer som kallas hunnen och goten kan tyckas vara nog så konstiga (och historiskt tveksamma att sätta i samma lag), så är det inte mycket jämfört med deras överhuggare: en modern Morgana le Faye som är i USA och försöker sabotera krigsproduktionen för nazisternas räkning, och inte ens en sjöstjärna med svans som metamorferar till en gasjätte är väl egentligen konstigare än en intergalaktisk samling hjältar som får krafter baserade på färgen grön från underliga ringar.

I många fall verkar det faktiskt inte vara så mycket fråga om att skriva om faktiska hantlangare som underliga, tämligen självständiga skapelser, som utomjordingarna Edam och Gouda som Järnmannen fick kämpa emot, eller Little Dot, där denna unga flickas radda av underliga onklar och tanter får hjälp av henne, men där de byts ut från gång till gång och bara sällan återkommer.

Påfallande ofta är ju faktiskt medhjälparna snarast en variant av huvudhjälten (ofta i miniatyr), eller ett djur med samma förmåga: Stålmannen är förvisso värst, men långt ifrån ensam, som Silver Streak och hans falk visar på, eller Airmale och Stampy (nej, de sponsrades inte av postverket). Av djuren är Rex, ledarhunden, klart mest intressant, då det är han som är den klart mest anmärkningsvärde, medan den cirkusdirektör han bistår framstår som mer ordinär. Bland människornas kan noteras att Thunderbolts tjänare Tabu enbart kunde varit föga mer än ännu en betjänt som hjälper sin stundom maskprydde arbetsgivare, men han var den drivande i samarbetet, medan synlige hjälten var mer tveksam till hela idén.

Som tidigare delar i serien är det här snarast en provkarta på underligheter än ett försök till djupare analys. Det är dock underhållande och någon gång tänkvärt: även om mycket skattade åt undergången så berodde det knappast alltid på att det var sämre än det som blev kvar.… (meer)

I received this copy through my Loot Crate subscription. If you are a comic book fan then you will probably find this book interesting. This is the shorter version of the book due to it being and "exclusive" Loot Crate item, about 25 to 27 pages shorter. I wander which villains where omitted? There was only one villain I had ever heard of, Modok, but then again most of the hero's I'd never heard of either. I had also received The League of Regrettable Superheroes from Loot Crate.

This book splits up the comic books into three eras, 1938-1949 The Golden Age, 1950-1969 The Silver Age, and 1970-Present The Modern Age. The author explains what drove the artists in each era and gives a quick review of various villains from those eras.

Anyway if you want to learn a little bit about some regrettable supervillains or if you just like comic books then you should pick up a copy. I personally got a few laughs from it.… (meer)
