I enjoyed Ms. Murray’s story about young Ty Shirwud and his growth toward manhood and responsibility. Wil narrates this first-person reckoning as an orphan, living in Manitoq Creek, a small all-male logging camp in a remote part of Sekkerland, Murray’s detail imagined local. He is a fourteen-year-old, uneducated, illiterate boy raised by Ty, a logger who had been a friend of his mother.
Life for Wil could have continued peacefully in the sylvan surroundings of his camp home but for the three strangers who show up looking for him. The savagery that Wil experiences in the rest of this well-written novel starts that day with the beating then killing of Ty and Wil’s dog. With his dying breath Ty exhorts Wil to “find the Midwife.” The dying declaration means nothing to Wil, but it will become his quest and the central plot for this intriguing story. The three murders, led by Revout Sachs, also want to find the Midwife and believe that Wil knows where she is hiding. Kidnapping him is how they will find the Midwife. The traumatized boy is roped over the back of a pack horse and hauled for days on a journey to Revout Sachs destination, the city of Ferule.
A city occupied by one thousand boys and for adult men, no woman. Since Wil has never seen a woman, he’s not concerned with the strangeness. Yet. The antagonist Revout Sach is a leader of The Strong who rules the land through forced labor, whippings, burnings, and any number of other tortures. The author does a credible job of writing the scenes that culminate the suspense. The arrival of a female doctor and her young assistant, Leah, prompts Wil to realize that there is beauty, kindness and gentleness in the world. But none is to be found in Ferule.
Leah also narrates alternate chapters in first-person. While her dialog is natural and modern, Wil speaks as the illiterate he is. In my opinion, you have to be very smart to write a dumb guy. But as the story progress and Wil is taught to read, then to write, the first-person dialog improves, becoming less illiterate. This change in the dialog becomes a metaphor for Wil’s growth to manhood.
This very enjoyable fantasy begins with an attractive; colorful, book cover design inviting the reader to open the book. I highly recommend this book for all age readers. You will find it a pleasant and uplifting experience. I find it to be a Five Star Selection.
