The author profiles women throughout history, starting with Joan of Arc, giving brief bios and explaining their role in history. Some of the selections are...a bit odd...like Queen Isabella, but the author does explain her reasoning for including her. Some of the ones left out were also odd...no sign of Hypatia, none of the women scientists that have done so much for the world. I suspect some of the omissions were to keep to the 21, not make the book too long, and include a number of non-white women. While this is laudable, it does leave a lot out, and women who have done a lot for women. Still, it is interesting reading, and definitely worth the time.… (meer)

Picks up some really interesting stories and ideas. Stronger on the later, more detailed stories, in particular the suffragettes, while the opening Boudicca (or Boadicea, as Murray insists on calling her) is the weakest. Definitely worth reading, the stories are told in a good engaging style and nice bite sized chapters

From the title, it's not all that clear that the subject is limited to mostly Europe. So unfortunate in era that is working toward uncovering women's invisible histories from all over the world and from all time periods. Afterall, women hold up half the sky, as the saying goes. These are important women to know about, but are they the best selection or the *most* important? I think there's a fair argument to be had that this topic is much richer than outlined here.
