The electro-powered grooves of the writing-production team the Neptunes have abetted fine-to-great tracks by everyone from Jay-Z and Ol' Dirty Bastard to Britney Spears. On their debut as performers, they display an irresistible knack for hooky tracks rooted in the eclectic listening habits they developed while growing up in the multiracial Virginia Beach, Virginia, neighborhoods they still call home. Fusing album rock and rap more forcefully and convincingly than Kid Rock or Durst-style aggro bands (the latter of whom they seem to lampoon on "Rock Star"), N.E.R.D. whip up a creamy yet slammin' mix. Main men Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo coax apropos guest shots from Kelis (the get-your-freak-on "Truth or Dare," the sexiest thing here aside from the ménage-a-wow plea "Tape You") and a handful of up-and-coming members. The live instrumentation that replaces the machine-tooled tracks of an earlier import version of In Search Of retains the tunes' syncopation while rendering it palatable for less eclectic rock fans. While not a commercial blockbuster on the order of many of their clients' discs, this venture is nonetheless one of 2002's standout releases. --Rickey Wright

Enn Eee Arr Dee, November 25, 2002
Reviewer: Camden Bremen "Music Fan" (Los Angeles, CA) - See all my reviews
By the time 'In Search Of' dropped earlier this year, the singular production style of Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo (collectively knows as The Neptunes) could already be heard issuing forth from car stereos worldwide, thanks to their work on songs by Mystikal, Britney Spears, Jay-Z and about a dozen other Top 40 mainstays.

Sporting multiple feathers in their caps, N.E.R.D. could have easily thrown a standard Hip-Hop/Rap CD into the mix and watched the sales rack up. Luckily for the growing throngs of music fans who had begun following the Neputnes trail, they did a whole lot more than that.

In fact, the previous version of 'In Search Of' was pulled at the last possible moment to allow them to re-record using live instruments instead of drum machines and samples. The end result is one of the best releases of 2002 - hands down.

Shifting gears more seamlessly than a Porsche 959, 'In Search Of' moves from Hip-Hop to Funk to Rock to Rap to R&B without so much as a ripple - all the while utilizing the fresh, staccato drumbeats, warped but funky keyboard parts and crunchy guitars that these guys have become famous for.

Even though many of these songs sound like radio smashes (for various formats) only Lapdance and Rockstar seem to have received decent airplay so far. Maybe the Neptunes save the radio songs for other artists (i.e. N.O.R.E.'s 'Nothin'), although many of the songs on 'In Search Of' will sound somewhat familiar due to their extensive use for television shows and commercials.

My favorite tracks (in order) are:

Am I High
Lapdance
Things Are Getting Better
Rock Star
Truth or Dare

In addition to the full CD, this version contains 15 minutes of live performance footage, included as Enhanced Content.

"In Search Of..." is simply an ill album. There is simply no other way to put it. Pharrell and Chad Hugo never cease to amaze you with those amazing guitar riffs, heart-thumping baselines and giddy, geeky lyrics. The album boasts several single-worthy tracks and those obscure, but nevertheless, talented guest appearances by artists such as Lee Harvey & Vita (on "Lapdance"), Kelis & Pusha-T of the Clipse ("Truth or Dare"), and on the stellar questioning track, "Am I High," Malice of the Clipse. N.E.R.D.'s debut, "In Search Of..." is certainly a treat for all those hardcore Neptune fans.

Lapdance (featuring Lee Harvey & Vita) - 5/5
Things Are Getting Better - 4/5

Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo practically sweat platinum. As the production duo behind the Neptunes, they have crafted monster hits for everyone from Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears to Jay-Z and Ol' Dirty Bastard. In their spare time they make the music they really like under the banner N.E.R.D. Equally inspired by Duran Duran's silk-spun new wave classics and the Beatles' strapping psychedelic epics, Fly or Die, the follow-up to 2002's In Search Of, is a bustling, bumping disc highlighted by rowdy tracks like "She Wants to Move" and "Jump," a collaboration with members of Good Charlotte. The nu-metal crunch of the last album gives way to a more suitable '70s vibe, making the band sound like an unholy cross between Sly & The Family Stone and E.L.O.--as filtered through A Tribe Called Quest. That's a good thing. --Aidin Vaziri

I'm calling it right now - this s#&* is HOT!!!

I have been playing it non-stop since I bought it. It is jam-packed with hot beats, great guitar and smooth lyrics. My favorite tracks are "Fly or Die", "She Wants to Move" and "Breakout". The rest are equally stellar though, including the hidden track!! N*E*R*D transcends the boundaries of rock/rap/pop to make music so good it can't just be pigeon-holed as one thing or another. Buy it now and play it loud!

Can't go wrong with Fly or Die, December 29, 2005
Reviewer: T.E. (New Mexico,USA) - See all my reviews
The Neptunes, the multi-talented force behind some of mainstream's most popular hits, does it yet again with the diverse yet rockin "Fly or Die" their 2004 release.

Pharrell's no stranger to the business by any means, and he and partner Chad Hugo have crafted quite a few great songs with the likes of Jay-Z, Snoop Dogg and Justin Timberlake among others. Their debut "In Search Of...." found them breaking new ground and experimenting with rythyms, not unlike another awesome producer known as Timbaland (aka Tim Mosley). But it's this album, "Fly or Die", that truly showcases both Pharrell's and Chad's talents strongly. Not only is it hip-hop, but you also get a good mix of funk, alternative rock and R&B all in one clever and succcessful package. Standout songs for me include "Drill Sergeant", "Wonderful Place", "Backseat Love" and "Maybe". The whole album is definitely worth a listen and should offer something to everyone.

With Pharrell's smooth and suave vocals and great beats to match, you can't go wrong with giving "Fly or Die" a listen. The songs on this will tide me over until Pharrell's solo release. A great album.

this is dope, December 4, 2005
Reviewer: Benjy "Benjy" (Australia) - See all my reviews
Crossing rock and roll with the best hip hop production this decade certainly isn't easy, but N.E.R.D have dropped fire on this release.
At first listen, it sounds a little shallow, a little too experimental. By the 3rd or 4th listen you start to realise how good this release really is. Basically, it's the best across genre's release in a while. standouts include:
Drill Sergeant - 5/5
Thrasher - 5/5
Fly or Die - 5/5
Jump - 5/5

the rest are solid, at least 3 out of 5 each. Don't buy this if your expecting pharell to be singing or rapping over his usual hip hop beats that he churns out for jay-z and co. Buy this album because it proves Pharell's musical genius, as it is pushing boundaries and delivering great music at the same time.

For all N.E.R.D. fans to have, November 6, 2005

I'm a fan of NERD and after purchasing 'In Search Of........ i thought this album would be much better..I was wrong! However, it wasn't a disappointing wrong, as this album, I must stress, is very pleasing to the ears. Its more rocky, than hip-hop-py if you compare it to 'In Search of'. Regardless, It's a good album, but lacks a little something....
Taking from their Hip-Hop background N.E.R.D blends in classic rock styling from the likes of Steely Dan in the song "She wants to move" with a prominent funk guitar interwoven with a catchy vocal background. Taking you on a journey through virtually every style of music the album "Fly or Die" excels on every level, any fan of N.E.R.D or other songs produced by Pharrell should definitely pick this album up. However don't be discouraged if you don't fall in love with it initially just like all the finer things in life this music is an acquired taste. Before you know it you'll find this CD a permanent addition to your collection. The tracks that appeal to me the most are "Dont Worry About", She wants to Move", "Maybe", Backseat Love", and "Jump".
