This book is all about time. It describes what time is, the reason we tell time, and how to tell time in different ways. The various ways we tell time that are described are by using calendars, analog clocks, and digital clocks. The book also discusses how long different activities take, the elements on a calendar, a.m. and p.m., the three hands on a clock, and the chunks of time.
It is a humorous book that helps the child understand not only how to tell time but the concept of time and the many elements that it contains.… (meer)

Summary: This book is a good book to help kids understand how to tell time. It talks about how to tell time on digital and analog clocks. The book doesn't really have a storyline but it is a very helpful book. It is a humorous book that helps the child understand not only how to tell time but the concept of time. It talks about time being when things happen and how long it takes.

My reaction: I really enjoyed this book and thought it would be very helpful for the kids. Even though it was informational it was also very entertaining and kept me reading. It would be a good book for a second grade class.

Classroom:
1. Have them make their own clock and tell what time is on their clock.
2. Have them estimate how long it will take them to do something at home like brush their teeth and then have them time their selves and see how close they were.

My reaction:
I thought this was very a very good informational book. All children need to learn how to tell time on an actual clock instead of reading the numbers on their phone. I know too many children that cant look at the clock and figure out what time it is because they don't know the basics of it.

Classroom extension:
One way to make a lesson out of this book would to have each student make a clock out of a paper plate. Cut out hour hand and minute hand with construction paper. Then once the project is complete, I could ask the class to tell me " What time is 3:15?" and they would have to show me to ensure me that they understand the concept of telling time!

Summary: "Telling Time," by Jules Older demonstrates the purpose of time and the reason why it so important throughout the world and in our everyday lives. The book tells the functions of the minute, hour, and second hands on the clock and gives children multiple opportunities to practice telling time.

Personal Response: I thought this book was sufficient for its purpose of informing young children on time and how to tell it. The exercises were fun and useful and the little humor that the author included served in a way that lightened the mood of me, and definitely the young reader in learning this new concept.

Extension Ideas:
(1. Have students form circles of twelve with one student in the middle of the circle acting as the hands on the clock. The students must work together to demonstrate the right time the teacher calls out, using themselves.
(2. Have students come up with a scenario to demonstrate that they understand the concept of telling the difference of time that has passed. (i.e. Sally arrived at the store at 3:45 PM. She arrived back at her home at 5:00 PM. The amount of time that has passed is 1 hour and 15 minutes.
