Excellent book on author’s history, his trip through Sri Lanka, Sri Lankan history and the Civil War, and a few random yet related topics detailing even more about Sri Lanka. I never expected this much when I initially purchased the book at Laksala next to Colombo’s National Museum, but it delivered on all counts. It added tremendously to my trip to Sri Lanka and even a bit to my 2015 Southwest Coast Path trip in England (think Exmoor, Glenthorne, and cats)! Finished 04.03.20 in Malta.

Ondaatje makes the case that Hemingway recognized that the lack of civilization in East Africa and a real physical danger safari brought freed Hemingway from the shackles society applied to celebrities. The transitions between Hemingway’s word, scholar’s interpretations, and the author’s own opinion were well done. The book has chapter notes, bibliography, and an index.… (meer)

Like Ondaatje, I have a strong interest in Richard Burton. I found this book charming and enjoyed the author's photographs immensely. It's written in a style more suggestive of a personal journal than that of a professional travel writer, but I found that part of its charm. For a scholarly look at Burton, the reader will want to look elsewhere, but this book certainly excites curiosity and offers insight into its subject.
