This book covers medieval castles in England and Wales in the Middle Ages. Castles were unknown until the Normans came in 1066. Important and powerful men needed fortresses and a castle was necessary, especially with feuds and wars. After the mid-1500's, castles were only needed for coastal defense. Powerful men no longer needed castles; they build stately houses instead.

The author defines what a castle is and is not, then proceeds to detail castle development through the centuries. Weapons of war and sieges are also discussed. Many castles are still in existence today, the most famous being Windsor Castle.

The book has photographs and plans of various castles, castles of interest and whether they are available for visits, and a glossary of terms. This is a basic text on castle design and use.
