Ann-Maureen Owens

Ann-Maureen Owen and Jane Yealland have packed a lot of information about the history of Canada's flag (and the history of Canada itself) into this kids' book. As an American, I don't know much about Canada's history; we have so much history of our own to teach that there isn't much time to cover Canada in school. So everything in Our Flag was new to me. I was most surprised by how young Canada's flag is; I never knew that it only became official in my parents' lifetime!

The information is presented well, in small chunks of text that are easy to process. Bright, kid-friendly illustrations throughout help separate the text and enable readers to better understand all the facts being presented. I would have appreciated a simple flag timeline for reference, perhaps at the end of the book, as I found it difficult to keep all the dates straight. (Part of that difficulty arose because the information isn't presented in an entirely chronological order.)

Kids will enjoy the activities included near the end of the book, to make their own Canadian flag and to send coded messages with flags.
