A good range of short stories on some of the stranger moments in science. It's great to read of unsung heroes of science, especially when they are getting beaten up or all but drowned for the cause.

We do get to read about Farmer Buckley's exploding trousers, as well as a man having his testicles attacked while under anaesthetic, how mass-produced sushi came to be and how Sydney somehow lies directly underneath the centre of the Milky Way).

Some stories aren't as good as others but there's enough here to keep nerds such as myself entertained for hours.… (meer)

Excellent series of essays/short stories about some of the more interesting ways science has advanced throughout the ages. One or two are cringe worthy, but almost every single one of the stories contains some fascinating fact. The essays are based on the "Histories" section of NewScientist Magazine, an excellent publication in it's own right. I'll be looking for more of the books NewScientist has put out in the future. Very easy to read, written for anyone interested in science but not interested in getting bogged down in a scientist vocabulary.… (meer)
