I admit I stopped reading this book with only 15 pages to go in it. This basically sums up my feelings on this story...extreme indifference. It wasn't a bad book it just wasn't particularly interesting to me.

When Amy Patrick announced that she was releasing a new YA series featuring vampires, preordering didn't take a second thought. Despite that, I managed to snag a pre-release copy from the author herself so I could dive in early.

If you enjoyed her Hidden series, you will immediately be caught by the same tone you've already come to love from the author. A young woman - in this case, Abigail - isn't quite sure if she wants to remain in her Amish village or instead branch out into the world she's only barely caught a glimpse of, when she's swept up without a choice into a world of vampires, politics and a destiny she's not overly eager to embrace.

Abbi makes for a very compelling main character, in that her struggles begin so relatable and so very common that it's hard not to feel for her. Reese, who is so very reminiscent of Lad from the Hidden series, makes for a very frustrating counterpart in his desire to protect the woman he cares about from a fate she wouldn't choose for herself. I've tried to steel myself against the obvious villain in the story, as Patrick has a masterful way of allowing her characters to grow and change and oftentimes, reclaim a true sense of "right".

I'm eager to see how the Crimson Accord unfolds, and what else we learn about this world where vampires struggle to keep their hard-won place in society. Book two drops in December, so thankfully we won't have too long to wait.

Updated after reading the full series:

This series is fantastic! The first couple of books are my favorites, but I loved the spinoffs as well.

Just the right amount of fantasy, romance and intrigue throughout each book to keep you hooked, and a steady connection between all the characters so it feels like one big, cohesive story even though it's broken into mini-sagas that could technically be standalone.

Original Review:

Stumbled onto this as a freebie and couldn't put it down until I was finished. While the story and several "twists" were predictable, it didn't detract from what was a very interesting and lovely little fantasy story. It was well written, while still obviously geared toward the YA genre, but as a grown woman and mom, I was entertained throughout. Not even ashamed to admit that I got rather emotional there a time or two.

I'm eager to continue the series to see where Ryann, Lad and Nox lead us.

I devoured Crimson Storm in a day's time... and immediately regretted it for the wait until March!

It picks up roughly a year after the events of Crimson Born and immediately finds Abi and her friends in trouble, making for a quick read of nonstop action and suspense as they try to find their way to safety.

So many things happened in this book that I didn't even know I absolutely *needed* to have happen... but Amy Patrick, being the amazing storyteller that she is, winds her plots to equally mend and break readers as they make their way through. We're starting to see both sides to the human-vampire world, and it's sure to make for increasing complications in the books ahead.

While the book doesn't leave on a cliffhanger per se, it does most definitely lead up to the next one, which I'm eagerly waiting for. Neither this book, nor the first, should be approached as a standalone, so do yourself a favor and grab Crimson Born before jumping into this one.

As with anything from this author, I'd highly recommend.
