961 The People's President The Electoral College in American History and the Direct-Vote Alternative, by Neal R. Peirce (read 20 Jul 1968) When I finished reading this book I was convinced the author was right and that we should scrap the electoral college method for electing the president of the United States. In the years since 1968 that conviction has eroded in my mind and I no longer am convinced the electoral college should be scrapped, even though the debacle in 2000 brought George W. Bush to the Presidency. I have wondered if I were to re-read the book, would I again become convinced that the electoral college should be eliminated? (Now, on 29 Dec 2019, I feel the electoral college provision should be modified to provide that a state should have only as many electoral votes as it has representatives in the House of Representatives. This is a good compromise, making the electoral college more accurately reflect the population of the states.)… (meer)
