Penelope Lively has written over 18 books for children, and over 15 titles for adults, distinguishing herself on both levels. Among the awards she has received are the coveted Booker Prize for the adult novel "Moon Tiger" (1987) and the Carnegie Medal for the highly acclaimed juvenile work, "The toon meer Ghost of Thomas Kempe" (1973). In Lively's writing, for both adults and children, the recurrent theme is interpreting the past through exploring the function of memory. "My particular preoccupation as a writer is with memory. Both with memory in the historical sense and memory in the personal sense." Beginning her writing career in the early 1970's, Lively wrote exclusively for children for over a decade. Because children have limited memories, devices were used to explore their perceptions of the past, such as ghosts in "Uninvited Ghosts and Other Stories" (1985), and a sampler in "A Stitch in Time' (1976). Lively's first adult novel, "The Road to Lichfield" (1977) was the result of turning to an older audience when she felt inspiration running out. Her adult novels include "Passing On" (1995), the story of a mother's legacy to her children and 'Oleander, Jacarandi: A Childhood Perceived' (1994) which is a memoir of Lively's childhood. Penelope (Low) Lively, born March 17, 1933 in Cairo, Egypt, had a most unusual childhood. She grew up in Cairo with no formal education until age 12, when her family put her in boarding school in England. After earning a B.A. in history at Oxford in 1955, she married Jack Lively, a university professor, whom she calls her most useful critic. They have a son and a daughter, Adam and Josephine. - Novelist and children's writer Penelope Lively was born in Cairo, Egypt, in 1933 and brought up there. She came to England in 1945, went to school in Sussex, and read Modern History at St Ann's College, Oxford. Penelope Lively contributes regularly to a number of national daily newspapers and literary and educational journals including the Sunday Times, The Observer and the Times Educational Supplement. She has written radio and television scripts and was presenter for a BBC Radio 4 programme on children's literature. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature, a member of PEN and a former Chairman of The Society of Authors. She was awarded an OBE in 1989 and a CBE in 2001.

Een geweldig boek, prachtig vormgegeven, dat gerust dubbel zo dik had mogen zijn. De verteltrant van Lively is gezellig, onderhoudend, grappig en informatief. Elk nieuw hoofdstuk begint met een zwart-wit tekening van Katie Scot (dé Katie van bijvoorbeeld Het Plantenboek) wat dit boek visueel al tot een echt hebbeding maakt.
Penelope houdt van lezen, schrijven én tuinieren; en dat allemaal al van kindsbeen af. Het zijn de dingen die haar al haar ganse leven hebben geïnteresseerd en hebben beziggehouden. Haar ideeën, kennis, wetenswaardigheden en visie deelt ze in deze parel met ons.
Gaande van de tuin uit haar kindertijd in Caïro, de tuin van Virginia Woolf (én die van haar minnares), de waterlelies van Monet tot de boeken van Jane Austen en haar kleine (Penelope) stadstuin van nu in Londen.
Ze kijkt naar schilderijen, catalogussen, open tuinen, ze leest literatuur, gedichten en boeken van specialisten over tuinieren. Maar bovenal zit ze een leven lang met haar handen in de chocoladekleurige aarde, ze leeft in het nu en kijkt uit naar de toekomst. Ze ondergaat de seizoenen en kweekt een echte tuiniersblik (wat dat is legt ze graag zelf uit). Dat alles maakt dit boek tot een smakelijke brok kennis en literatuur. Zoals zij ook zelf opmerkt, je leest het als een schrijver echt zelf tuiniert.
Haar geweldige (Britse) humor maakt dit boek helemaal tot een feest. Ik heb geregeld luidop zitten schaterenlachen. En de beste ‘mopjes’ heb ik onderlijnd.
Met mijn koer vol potten ben ik gezegend of te beklagen (afhankelijk van met wie je me vergelijkt) maar mijn blik naar buiten zal nooit meer hetzelfde zijn. En dat door dit betoverende boek dat naast goesting in lezen (de literatuurlijst achteraan ga ik uitspitten) ook geweldig veel kriebels in de vingers brengt.

Years ago Penelope Lively surprised me with "Moon tiger", a misleading autobiographical exploration of the past of a rather eccentric woman. It seemed to me that Lively had made it her trademark in literature to explore the vigour and reality of the past, because the theme is also dealt with in other books. She wrote this booklet at the age of 80, in her own modest style, as a "view from old day". She muses about the passing of time (getting faster as you get older), the inconveniences and challenges of aging, the benefits of 'becoming slightly invisible', and especially the blessing of memory, as an instrument for travelling through the past.
Lively recalls personal memories, quite jumpy and random; she dwells for a long time on the bliss of reading (“it frees me from the closet of my own mind. Reading fiction, I see through the prism of another person’s understanding; reading everything else, I am travelling…”) and brings a nice ode to books. But above all she opens a perspective on old age as a kind of liberating phase in life: “I think there is a sea-change, in old age – a metamorphosis of the sensibilities. With those old consuming vigours now muted, something else comes into its own – an almost luxurious appreciation of the world that your are still in. Spring was never so vibrant, autumn never so richly gold.”
Maybe Lively opens a lot of open doors, and offers no more than some musings that will mainly be enjoyed by the fans, but oh well, she does so with style. And last but not least, she reminds us of her most important lesson in life: that the past really exists, is real in our lives, if only in the form of a few ancient earthenware plates with leaping fish on it: “The past is irretrievable, but it lurks. It sends out tantalizing messages, coded signals in the form of a clay pipe stem, a smashed wine bottle. Two leaping fish from twelfth-century Cairo. I can't begin to understand what that time was like, or how the men who made them lived, but I can know that it all happened - that old Cairo existed, and a particular potter. To have the leaping fish sherd on my mantelpiece - and all those other sherds in the cake tin - expands my concept of time. There is a further dimension to memory; it is not just a private asset, but something vast, collective, resonant. And all because fragments of detritus survive, and I can consider them.”… (meer)
