Come funziona la mente? Cos'è la creatività? Sono domande che ci si fa ca sempre, e ancora oggi non si ha in effetti una risposta chiara, univoca e definitiva. Ecco perché questo libro, pur avendo più di trent'anni di vita, ha ancora un suo senso. L'approccio di Perkins è peculiare: inizia con l'affermare un concetto (Proposition), che poi viene rapidamente demolito per arrivare quando va bene a un concetto rivisto, mantenendo il buono della parte iniziale ma specificandolo; e quando va male a un'affermazione che è l'opposta di quella iniziale. Dal mio punto di vista, in cui come ho detto la creatività è ancora un mistero, questo metodo non è malvagio: almeno ti costringe a pensare un po', proprio come gli esercizi sparsi per il testo sono degli ottimi modi per accorgersi di persona che le nostre idee ingenue sono spesso fallaci. Altro punto interessante è la spiegazione di come il brainstorming non è che funzioni sempre così bene, e soprattutto che il suo risultato dipende molto dalle persone coinvolte: la maggior parte della gente si ferma quando trova un'idea decente e mette per così dire i remi in barca. The author suggests that “breakthrough thinking” isnot really a different type of thinking. There’s no unique mental mechanism that kicks in. Rather, there are types of problems which require some different mental approaches because they are “unreasonable”, they cannot be solved solely by the application of reason. He deems these “ Klondike problems” because of the similarities they share with the problems faced by gold prospectors in the Klondike gold rush:

Wilderness of possibilities – a large solution space

Clueless plateau – with few clues

Narrow canyons – that tend to trap the search process in a solutionless area

Oases of false promise – where the measure of promise is high, but that do not contain a solution.

The structure of these problems creates a distinctive problem solving experience involving a long search, little apparent progress, a precipating event, and a “cognitive snap.”… (meer)

In the first nine pages describing his four constructs of; purpose, structure, model, and argument, David Perkins provides the very best description of human cognition that I have found in my 18+ years of researching the topic. He goes on to expand into the complexities of perception and expertise, but the core thesis Dr. Perkins provides here is nothing short of the true, core, fundamental nature of the human experience. I like this book!
