This is a wonderful book. Told from two points of view: that of Flo, who is 27 and about to go to New York for a year, and her grandmother Peggy, who is close to 80. Peggy's husband and daughter had Huntington's Disease, and it's an even chance that Flo may have inherited it...

This is a character-based story, showing the importance of family life, of supportive friendships, and of unconditional love. It's somewhat educational about this genetic syndrome too, but so well done that it didn't feel at all intrusive.

I found it almost impossible to put down - this is one of the best books I have read in a long time. I would give it six stars if I could! Very highly recommended.

I acquired this by mistake, not realising it is a reissue of 'Look the World in the Eye' (which I loved). 'Letters from my Sister' is nowhere near such a good title, and when I read my edition, I discovered that the last ten pages were missing! Thankfully I had not yet given away 'Look the World in the Eye', so will be sticking with that one.

I started reading this, and 10 pages in realised I'd read it before! I still ploughed on though! This is an inoffensive tale of Gilly and her love life - pretty standard fare really. It was entertaining, if a little predictable, and the characters seemed quite believable. If you like chick lit (sorry to use that phrase, but this is classic fare) then you will probably enjoy it. It is what it is - nothing hugely special, but not terrible either!

In the prologue, Mary learns that her newborn baby, Alice, has the genetic condition called cystic fibrosis. Her daughter’s life expectancy is about ten years.

We then move forward twenty-six years. The two main characters are Alice, who has outlived her initial prognosis, and Tom, who is attracted to her. The book mostly switches between their viewpoints, and is very well written.

The novel is based on the true story of a young woman called Alice Martineau, who was passionate about music and wanted to be a singer, despite her illness. Most of the names are changed, and some of the characters are entirely fictional. There are epilogues explaining this, from more than one perspective.

The novel charts Alice’s determination to make an album of her music. She wrote lyrics, many of which are given in the book. This plot runs alongside her deteriorating health, and some side stories involving her close friends. The descriptions are vivid and sometimes moving without being overwhelming. Even the inevitable ending is surprisingly positive.

All in all, I thought it a powerful and inspiring book and would recommend it highly.
