This book was so hard to take. The reality of the plight of the wild horses today in the Western states where they are rounded up for slaughter or chased by helicopters until they drop is pretty hard to read about. My friend, Jim Christy, who sent me this book, thought I "needed" to read it. It was very eye-opening to me who knew nothing about the real problem of what to DO with surplus wild mustangs, a real symbol of America, much like the Bald Eagle.

American governments lack of interest in these awesome animals is truly disgusting.

Compelling study of these magnificent animals by a Pulitzer Prize-winning author. He eventually comes down on the side of natural predation (mountain lions) to control herd populations, but the contraceptive PZP shows promise too--if the BLM would just implement its use. Philipps isn't a fan of PZP because he thinks it compromises the mythic "wildness" of the mustang. A romantic, really.

This book is well researched and shows the problems that a number of soldiers experience once they return to civilian life after going into conflict zones. It shows how these men and women are effected by what they endured. A good read.
