I read this book about a year ago, shortly after my own father had died following a long Illness.

Phillips' empathetic treatment of aging and of the challenges facing the caregivers of elderly parents moved me. I found reading this book to be a meditative process. It unfolds slowly as it reveals different faces of aging and death through Kuan Yin.

I wanted to like this book but just couldn't get into the Kuan Yin, the Buddhist teacher goddess. She is about compassion and there was much in the story of vignettes of an old man. I believe there is a select audience for this book and although I like a bit of Buddhism teaching, this did not help me.

I recommend it with reservations and a side comment that one should review it in the bookstore before buying it and having to skip portions of it. Otherwise, enjoy and use it to remind of us of the aging in society.… (meer)
