Chocolatier, Rory Garrett has spent all of her life in the shadow of her highly successful quarterback half brother, Clint, until he is arrested for murdering his girlfriend. Rory knows he couldn't have done it and tries to prove it, but she finds it tougher than she thought, especially when her brother's agent, Brett Rivers, begins to interfere in her investigation. Brett is equally convinced that Clint is innocent and knows that his standing at the Champion Sports Agency depends on clearing his client. Rory and Clint try to deal with their growing attraction and the interruptions caused by the problems of their businesses, but they just aren't sure if they are going to find the real killer before it is too late.

Simply The Best is filled with quirky characters and descriptions of yummy chocolate. The protagonists are well developed, leaving them a bit unlikable at times throughout the story, but the banter is fun and provides some laugh out loud moments. The plot splits time between the romance and the mystery and remains fairly balanced, however a weakness of the story is the amount of time spend on the investigation, which ends up being solved by accident rather than intent. Suspenseful moments add to the narrative as well as a satisfying conclusion. Overall, Simply the Best is a fun addition to the Chicago Stars series and well worth the read

This book was problematic in ways I didn't expect for a romance this old. The animal cruelty stuff bothered me, but knowing that animal handling practices have changed in circuses made it a little easier to take. But this book would not be good for people who are very sensitive to animal cruelty. Odd thing to write in a review of a romance novel.

The main character wasn't nearly as flighty as the cover blurb said, which was odd. It was also odd that she talked like an 18th century nun. I had to look up the meaning of "circumstanced" and I'm still not convinced that it's commonly used the way SEP used it. And some of the descriptions of clothing items were strange.

Mostly, I didn't enjoy this book. The ending was good, which saved this a little for me.

I really enjoyed this. It reminded me of some of the older Jennifer Crusie books, but with a little more emotional depth and development of side characters. I'll have to check out some of this author's other books.

Yes, it was a surprisingly good book. However, it was not an appropriate first venture into Romance. The main character had been raped as a high-schooler, so she had a lot of intimacy issues. The whole theme made me uncomfortable and the book was not the most pleasant read. Theoretically, if 33% of women have been raped in their lives, then the probably of meeting a person like Phoebe is not so slim. Still, my romances do not start with overcoming such an obstacle.
In addition, the entire beginning with the inheritance and team ownership was too unbelievable. Surely, the story would have worked on a smaller scale. Why does these authors feel the need to inflate the importance of their characters?

Despite the enjoyment of the read, it was also a bit too erotic. Every time I sit down and read I get hot and bothered. Certainly there is a place for that and it is reserved for short stories.

Will not read Phillips again...
