Daniel tells everyone he isn't afraid of anything. He acts like he is afraid of dogs, but when his little sister makes fun of him he tells her he just doesn't like dogs. When he comes home from school one day his aunt's dog is there, and his family will be watching the dog for a little bit. He hides in his room all day until he needs to go to the bathroom at night. He runs to the bathroom and when he gets inside, the dog Bandit is hiding in there. Daniel is afraid of Bandit and jumps in the bathtub to hide, but then realized Bandit is trying to get to him because the dog is afraid of the thunderstorm outside. He begins to pet and then hold the dog, and then tells Bandit he can sleep in Daniel's bed for the night, and decides that he does like dogs after all.

This book is great for text connections. There are opportunities to broach the subject of fears or the absence of fears. many children and even adults can relate with a boy who is "afraid" of what he doesn't know. He didn't like dogs because he didn't know anything about them and had no experience with them. I would read this book in a Kindergartner classroom.
