More book in the series. Might try re-reading. Series with a really good story.
So 3 stars maybe 3.5
The story was ok, some of it was kinda like oh hey here's a castle and you're now thrown into Farie... sigh.. She didn't do any research about anything.. you'd have thought after the first book's revelation about her dad she would've learned more about that side of her. PLUS I'd like to go deeper into her childhood that she doesn't remember.

I wasn't sure I would like this book. But the interesting approach to magic and the Fae was great. It was a great introduction into the world/series.
I'm looking forward to the rest in the series.

This world is an alternate timeline one where the Fae came out of hiding. Alex, as a grave witch, has the ability to call on dead peoples’ souls or essence? The book wasn’t 100% clear on what a shade actually represents. Anyway, she’s apparently really good at this but terrible at all other magic.
The characterization lacked some depth so I didn’t really feel like I knew any of the characters and thus didn’t root for or oppose in general. Hard to get me invested in the goings on of a character who lacked personality besides, yeah, she’s a grave witch with family issues and sees the world with grave sight.
So the romance part of this story suffers the same fate. Death is represented as some regular looking Joe but isn’t of course. Then you had Falin who was pulling the gruff cop, stay out it routine and suddenly they’re in the sack together. An entire chapter devoted to that. Ugh. Also Death is in love with her. Hmmm
Basically, it was an okay book. Not sure if I’ll continue the series or not. Three stars.
