For each letter of the alphabet, there's a word that pertains to Louisiana. This book is full of Louisiana history, tells of Louisiana traditions, contains geographical information, and tells of the wildlife native to Louisiana. This book is very educational and has beautiful illustrations. I'd recommend this book.

I would read this story during Mardi Gras week to my students. But, before I read the book I would invite them to the king cake party the day before. I think it would be engaging and interactive to do that with the students. This story is about a new student from out of town being invited to a king cake party. He doesn't even know what king cake is. This story is about friendship and the tradition of New Orleans. A cute book I would have on the shelf for Mardi Gras time.

Darn it all. This should have been wonderful, especially for me. But it was so frustratingly incomplete and uneven. I don't mean simply that there are only 26 letters, and so C had to be library Card and couldn't be Carnegie, but also details. It refers to Dewey 'in those days' without a date. It refers to 'even in our country.' It assumes some children won't know what the word Online means, and also that the readers will have a home computer with access to reference works. It doesn't acknowledge that the free public libraries further than NYC and Canada were also called Carnegie libraries.

My recommendation if you're curious - check it out from the library, note whatever information is new to you, research the rest of the answers.

For example, Dewey was born in 1851, and was a young man when he invented the DDC system. I'm in the process of reading a great 'Straight Dope' article about it all right now. (fyi, I prefer Straight Dope, in many ways, to Snopes. It's more fun, and I love the weekly newsletter in my inbox and the archives.) http://www.straightdope.com/columns/read/2238/whats-so-great-about-the-dewey-dec...

P is for Pelican is an alphabet book about Louisiana and is apart of a series by the Sleeping Bear Press. This book goes in order of the alphabet from A to Z and each letter is associated with something from Louisiana. Each page has a brief history of what was chosen for that letter and a poem. Being from Louisiana and reading this book, there were some letters I had never heard of. For letter I in the book they chose Islenos, which is a community of people found mainly in St. Bernard. I had never heard of Islenos before, so this book taught me a few things and I am from Louisiana. I think this book did a great job of giving just enough history and was beautifully illustrated. The students could have the opportunity to make their own alphabet book associated with Louisiana.… (meer)
