Jan had felt it the very first day, walking up to the door of the old house. She had known the watcher was there as they knocked and waited for old Mrs. Carstairs to come. And the little old woman, glancing at the woods, had known it was there, too.
The other night, for some weird reason, I happened to think of this book. I read it in the early 80s, as a preteen, and was totally creeped out by it...as well as by the movie with Lynn Holly Johnson and Bette Davis. Yet, as scared as I was, I also found myself oddly obsessed with it. Both invaded my nightmares for weeks afterward! Yikes!:)
If I hadn't been stuck on a ten-hour transAtlantic flight with nothing else to read but a monograph in Italian, I probably would not have finished this book. The constant, blatant foreshadowing was the literary equivalent of nails on a chalkboard and the rest of the book was overly flowery and highly repetitive. "We read and we slept and we dreamt and we heard the song of the birds and the sun rose and the sun set. The days moved and we all moved with them. Each day was the same and yet each day was different. That was the way it was when the days had a pattern. That was the way it was before the pattern was broken." That was the way it was for 224 pages.… (meer)
