It’s unusual to encounter a memoir—-even a humorous one—-devoid of personal reflection and perspective; in this respect, Hard Sell may be a first. Nevertheless, once I stopped anticipating the expected revelation of (even one) meaningful life lesson on Reidy’s part, I was able to enjoy Hard Sell for what it is—a wittily written story about a guy who strikes it big without really deserving it. And truthfully, Reidy never promises his reader more than that.

Jamie Reidy’s tale is one of stumbling into a high paying job with Pfizer where he learns within weeks how to play the system to outsmart his boss, his colleagues, and his company by abusing the system and trust required to make it work. While there’s plenty of room to criticize pharmaceutical industry practices, Reidy never admits to feeling compelled, or even mildly interested in, rising above the abusively powerful and deceitful practices of big pharma as one would expect in such a harsh expose.

Reidy’s brief stint at Pfizer includes time spent as a representative for Viagra—one of the biggest blockbuster drugs ever marketed, err developed. His firsthand account of what really happened behind the mysterious V curtain is worth the read. For example, Reidy explains how Bob Dole ended up as the first Viagra spokesperson.

To anyone with even a modest familiarity with the pharmaceutical industry, Reidy’s tell all doesn’t reveal much of anything that isn’t already widely known, tolerated, and accepted. Nevertheless, I did enjoy his writing style and appreciate the candor he infuses into the story of how, through one dumb luck fortune after another, he ended up not only writing a book, but selling the movie rights to the same, and getting a sweet whistleblower’s special deal in the end.
