Justin Richards is the author of over a dozen science fiction novels, as well as non-fiction books, audio and television scripts. He has edited anthologies of short stories, been a technical writer, founded and edited a media journal, and contributed articles to many mainstream magazines. At toon meer present, Justin is best known for acting as Creative Consultant to the BBC Books range of Doctor Who novels, and his own novels for the series are consistently popular. Doctor Who: The Secret Lives of Monsters door Justin Richards
Typisch een boek dat ik zelf nooit meer zou kopen. De tijd is voorbij van zo enorm fan zijn van een televisieserie of film dat ik daar ook wel graag boeken over wil hebben. Maar nu ik dit boek in mijn schoot geworpen kreeg en het met zoveel liefde gegeven is, ben ik er toch maar in gaan kijken. En tot mijn verrassing werd ik vrij snel getrokken in de wereld van de monsters van Doctor Who.

Door het grote formaat van het boek is er fijn gebruik gemaakt van de mogelijkheid van duidelijke foto's en ander materiaal over de verschillende monsters.

Eerst was ik nog even bang dat het alleen zou gaan over de monsters vanaf 2005, de tijd waarin de nieuwe serie Doctor Who is opgestart. Maar nee, er is ook veel teruggegrepen op de oorspronkelijke serie.

Natuurlijk komen de Daleks en de Cybermen aan bod maar ook The Great Intelligence en the Ice Warriors. Erg leuk ook om te zien hoe de verschillende monsters in de loop der tijd zijn veranderd wat ontwerp betreft.

Een deel van het boek is geschreven in de stijl van gedegen journalistiek waarbij alle (geheime) bronnen gebruikt worden om alle kennis over een bepaald monster te delen. Het andere deel heet achter de schermen en dat is precies waar het over gaat. Oftewel wie heeft het monster bedacht en hoe is het gemaakt.

De lol in dit boek zit hem vooral in de herkenning. Juist omdat ik deze serie in zijn geheel meerdere keren gezien heb, weet ik er wel een beetje wat van. Met het lezen en bladeren in een fanboek als deze, komen vele herinneringen terug en dan met name die waaraan ik destijds al zoveel plezier heb beleefd.… (meer)
