I'm rating this at 3½*** for its comprehensiveness. If you're looking for an analytical study of The Faerie Queene as children's literature, though, it won't be the book for you.

Although there's here and there a slight bit of analysis, of critical commentary, this book is largely a compendium of plot summaries of various children's books, along with a discussion of the illustrations. (Unfortunately, although this book contain a copious number of illustrations, they are all black-and-white and, even at that, are insufficient in number to support the author's references to them in her text – but that's the price you have to pay for a book from an academic publisher that has limited funds for illustrations, especially color illustrations.)

If you've got a compulsion to collect as many children's versions of The Faerie Queene that you can possibly find, then this is the book for you. It's an excellent catalog, but it's badly lacking in analysis and wouldn't be suitable for an academic text even at the graduate school level.

I got this through the Early Reviewers program ages ago, it was one of the first books I ever got for review. Too bad I was still figuring out how to use the program and I haven't even read "The Faerie Queene." I kept this on my shelf for ages trying to make myself work up to plowing through it, but I decided there was no point since I haven't read the original story. It looks really detailed, though, and covers the story's influence on a wide variety of areas.

Took me awhile to get through this since it was a more serious read. I found it to be really interesting and very thorough. Definitely not a beach read or something fluffy. I can see it being used in an English Lit class as required reading or as research material.

This book is by far the most thorough examination of a single work that I've ever read (which includes many of Jack Zipes dissections of fairy-tale works). If there is an angle of The Faerie Queene not examined in this book, I can't think of it. Not only do you get a thorough investigation of the work itself, but also looks at the cultural context in great detail. Anyone with an interest in fairy tale studies should love this book for its scope and level of detail.
