Although there's here and there a slight bit of analysis, of critical commentary, this book is largely a compendium of plot summaries of various children's books, along with a discussion of the illustrations. (Unfortunately, although this book contain a copious number of illustrations, they are all black-and-white and, even at that, are insufficient in number to support the author's references to them in her text – but that's the price you have to pay for a book from an academic publisher that has limited funds for illustrations, especially color illustrations.)
If you've got a compulsion to collect as many children's versions of The Faerie Queene that you can possibly find, then this is the book for you. It's an excellent catalog, but it's badly lacking in analysis and wouldn't be suitable for an academic text even at the graduate school level.… (meer)
