Imogen Rose is the author of the bestselling YA series, the Portal Chronicles. Imogen was born in a small town in Sweden and moved to London in her twenties. An interesting premise, let down by a distinct lack of substance both plot wise and with the characters. The book is clearly aimed towards the YA audience so I can overlook the endless talk about clothes, nail polish, ripped abs, brushing lips and ice hockey.

My main gripe with this book is the lack of suspense and urgency in the writing - it starts with a lot of promise as the protagonist tries to make sense of her situation. Then a few chapters in, the reader is basically handed the whole plot on a silver platter, told from another character's point of view. I found the shift in perspectives very distracting, almost lazy, the author choosing to use this third person's viewpoint to explain things rather than the let the reader unravel the mysteries through the eyes of the main character.

Instead, she goes continues about her daily life, oblivious and more concerned with making the hockey team than finding the cause or a solution to her predicament. Not only until the last pages does the plot and mystery pick up again, only to be left hanging for the next book.

I did enjoy the interactions between the characters, especially the solidarity between family members and her close friends but they ultimately lacked depth.

I don’t usually start a series with the third book and I worried I wouldn’t be able to follow the story and enjoy it. That was not the case with Retaliation.

I quickly became immersed in Cordelia’s story and as I got attached to the characters all I was thinking was, I have to read the other books.

It’s been a year and a half since Code Uprising was deactivated and things are back to normal, as much as they can be in a supernatural world.

Cordelia now works for King Sebastian and her romance with the sexy Fay, Jagger, is going strong. The human world is safe from further attacks by Sebastian’s now missing power hungry daughter, Katerina.

But something new is starting to happen. A Haiku is left at a gruesome scene involving the kings assistant that may be connected to Katerina. A school is attacked in Japan, leaving all humans dead and another occurs in the US with casualties over a thousand.

A cloaked figure supplies GRIP with a formula they suspect is targeted towards humans. Could it be Katrina’s doing? And why would she only be targeting humans?

The council has a policy of not getting involved in human matters but they may have to change that if they are being attacked by a supernatural entity. While the humans are unaware of their existence, that may change.

Imogen has created a complex world with many strong voiced characters. While I joined this series late, I was provided with enough background to easily follow their stories and connect with past ones.

There are terrorists, spies, all kinds of supernatural beings and humans co-mingling to get to the bottom of the attacks and the action steps as the attacks escalate.

This book came across as believable. You could take out the supernatural element and have a hack of a good action thriller, but the added otherworldly characters and world made it much more interesting and unpredictable.

I’m sure the many that have read the first two books in the Bonfire Chronicles will love this next installment and those that haven’t will want to read them after this great follow up.

This is a YA book and unlike most of the YA books I've read it really is geared toward that age level. That being said the story is compelling and I think I would read the sequel.

Integration (Bonfire Academy #2) by Imogen Rose

Integration is book two of the Bonfire Academy series; this is a fantastic series that should be read. I enjoyed the second book Integration as much as Initiation book one. Imogen Rose is one of my new favorite authors, her writing is excellent, story line flows well and the characters are great. I really enjoy Imogen writing and as soon as I was done reading Intergation I wanted to read the next book in this series.

In this book Cordelia is now working at Bonfire Academy as an apprentice for Professor Bern and continues to be a mentor to Faustine, of course there is someone trying to kill Faustine and Cordelia will spend every moment she can trying to figure out the mystery to make sure no harm comes to her. And to make matters worse she still hasn’t figured out what to do about Jagger and Quinn. Knowing she has to break up with Quinn is harder then she expected considering Quinn has all the sudden disappeared. Then to make matters worse Faustine loses control of her powers and ends in serious trouble.

Integration keeps you wondering who is really after Faustine, this story is full of suspense, a tad bit of romance and some unexpected things happen. I couldn’t stop reading Integration and as soon as I was done I really wanted to read book 3. I love this series and cannot wait to read more. Imogen Rose has proved to me that this is a series to be read. I have rated Integration 5 star rating and would recommend it to anyone who loves paranormal books. This series is full of mystery, suspense, some romance and great friendships. I hope if you’re reading this you will check out both books.
