Over de Auteur

Alex Ross was born in 1968. He attended St. Alban's School in Washington, D.C. and graduated from Harvard University in 1990. It was there that he studied under composer Peter Lieberson and was a D.J. on the classical and underground rock departments of the college radio station. He earned a toon meer Harvard A.B. in English summa cum laude for a thesis on James Joyce. From the years, 1992-1996, Alex Ross was a music critic at the New York Times. He also wrote for the New Republic, Slate, and The London Review of Books. In 1993 he started contributing to The New Yorker and became a staff writer in 1996. In 2007 his released his first book in the U.S. entitled The Rest is Noise: Listening to the Twentieth Century, a cultural history of music since 1900. This book received widespread crritical praise in the U.S. and earned a National Book Critics Circle Award, a spot on New York Times list of the ten best books of 2007, and a finalist citation for the Pulitzer Prize in general non-fiction. Ik luister erg veel naar muziek. Iedere dag draai ik wel een paar cd's. Intussen heb ik een enorme verzameling opgebouwd. Mijn voorkeur gaat sterk uit naar de klassieke muziek en de opera. Favorieten van mij zijn Bach (de Mattheuspassie en de cantates), Beethoven (zijn symfonieën, speciaal de 9e en de pianosonates), Mozart (opera's en de strijkkwartetten) en verder de opera's van onder andere Wagner, Puccini, Verdi en Bizet. Verder houd ik van wereldmuziek (Cesaria Evora, Buena vista social club, Youssou N'Dour, Salif Keita en de serie muziekcd's van the Rough Guide). Ook hoor ik graag Nederlandstalige muziek (Boudewijn de Groot, Liesbeth List en Ramses Shaffy, Doe Maar, Drs P.). Van alle muzieksoorten houd ik het minst van popmuziek, uitgezonderd grootheden als: De Beatles, Abba, Simon en Garfunkel, Kate Bush, Steely Dan en sommige nummers van de Rolling Stones.
Hoewel ik een aantal cd-gidsen in de kast heb staan (de Rough Guides voor respectievelijk klassieke muziek, opera en wereldmuziek) kijk ik er eigenlijk nauwelijks in. "De rest is lawaai" is het eerste serieuze muziekboek dat ik van voor tot achter heb gelezen. Zoals de ondertitel aangeeft gaat dit boek over de 20e eeuwse muziek, terwijl mijn muzikale voorkeuren vooral van oudere datum zijn. Grofweg gezegd ligt voor mij de grens rond 1920. Vrijwel alle klassieke muziek voor die tijd vind ik mooi, heel veel erna vind ik minder mooi tot niet om aan te horen. De jaren 20 zijn de jaren van componisten als Stravinski en Schönberg die geheel nieuwe geluiden introduceerden.
In "De rest is lawaai" vertelt Alex Ross het verhaal van de klassieke muziek in de 20e eeuw door middel van biografieën van een aantal grootheden als Richard Strauss, Stravinsky, Schönberg, Sibelius, Shostakovich en Benjamin Britten. Hoewel deze 6 componisten de meeste aandacht krijgen worden honderden anderen in het voorbijgaan kort besproken. Ook zijn e rhoofdstukken waarin de muziek in een bepaalde tijd en in een bepaald land wordt besproken, zoals die in Rusland tijdens Stalin, Duitsland onder Hitler en het Amerika van de New Deal. Verder bespreekt Ross een aantal muziekstukken wat uitgebreider waarbij hij een aantal muziektermen gebruikt.
Het boek is in prettig leesbaar Nederlands vertaald en leest gemakkelijk. Eigenlijk moet ik dit boek en tweede keer lezen en dan de besproken muziek gaan beluisteren. Ik weet niet of dit er van gaat komen.
Mijn persoonlijke favorieten uit de 20e eeuwse klassieke muziek zijn:
- Rachmaninov (symfonieën en pianoconcerten)
- Rodrigo (Concerto de Aranjuez, niet besproken)
- Ravel
- Shostakovich (7e symfonie)
- Britten (Peter Grimes en vioollconcert)
- Orff (Carmina Burana)
- Philip Glass (de opera Akhnaten)
- Ravi Shankar (Indiaas, er is een erg mooie cd met zijn muziek in de serie Rough Guide)
- Astor Piazolla
- John Rutter (koormuziek)
Hoewel hier erg mooie muziek tussen zit, haalt deze muziek misschien met uitzondering van Rachmaninov, het niet bij de oude meesters. Intussen is "De rest is lawaai" een prachtig boek met erg veel informatie over de 20e eeuwse klassieke muziek.
