Clifford Ross is an artist and writer who was born in New York City in 1952. He graduated from Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in 1973 and earned his B.A. from Yale University in 1974. He was Artist-in-Residence at the Louisville School of Art in 1979. His awards include the A. Conger toon meer Goodyear Fine Arts Award from Yale University in 1974 and the Helen Foster Barnett Prize, Sculpture, National Academy of Design, in 1984. In Abstract Expressionism: Creators and Critics: An Anthology, Ross uses interviews, essays, and letters exchanged between abstract artists and their critics to define the movement and explore the personalities of the artists. For The World of Edward Gorey, Ross provides the extensive interview with Gorey that introduces the artist, illustrator, writer, and theater designer to the reader. There is something about the drawings of Edward Gorey that has always fascinated me. What better way to learn more about the style of Gorey through this book. The first portion written by Mr. Ross was more fascinating in comparison to the second portion written by Ms. Wilkins. The first part of this book is an interview between Clifford Ross, showing the eccentricities of Mr. Gorey. The book is packed full of Gorey illustrations! Wonderful collection of some of his best work, which also displayed the different phases of art he created. The second portion of the book was almost like reading someone's doctoral thesis. I guess because I am not really affluent in art techniques and terminologies, I may have felt this was a little boring and over my head in some aspects.
Overall, the book is great for any Gorey enthusiast!
