Over de Auteur
Oliver Sacks was born in London, England on July 9, 1933. He received a medical degree from Queen's College, Oxford University and performed his internship at Middlesex Hospital in London and Mount Zion Hospital in San Francisco. He completed his residency at UCLA. In 1965, he became a clinical toon meer neurologist to the Little Sisters of the Poor and Beth Abraham Hospital. His work in a Bronx charity hospital led him to write the book Awakenings in 1973. The book inspired a play by Harold Pinter and became a film starring Robert De Niro and Robin Williams. His other works included An Anthropologist on Mars, The Mind's Eye, The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat, Uncle Tungsten, Musicophilia, A Leg to Stand On, On the Move: A Life, and Gratitude. In 2007, he ended his 42-year relationship with the Albert Einstein College of Medicine to accept an interdisciplinary teaching position at Columbia. In 2012, he returned to the New York University School of Medicine as a professor of neurology. He died of cancer on August 30, 2015 at the age of 82. (Bowker Author Biography) toon minder

- Oliver Sacks (Londen, 1933) is hoogleraar in de neurologie aan het Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York. Als auteur verwierf hij internationale faam met onder andere De man die zijn vrouw voor een hoed hield, neurologische case-histories uit zijn eigen praktijk, en Ontwaken in verbijstering, waarin hij op betrokken wijze het ‘ontwaken’ uit de slaapziekte (Encephalitis lethargica) beschrijft.

Oliver Sacks kennende is het logisch dat het geen rechttoe rechtaan autobiografie zou zijn. Het was dan ook af en toe wel even slikken. Want naast de rond WOII persoonlijke ervaringen van de opgroeiende Oliver wordt een behoorlijk uitgebreide geschiedenis van de scheikunde gegeven, nooit mijn sterkste vak op de middelbare school. Ik overwoog op een gegeven moment dan ook het boek aan de kant te leggen. Maar toen ik het weken later nog eens oppakte en verder ging lezen, werd ook deze geschiedenis plotsklaps interessant. Zo beleef je mee hoe al die kennis in de loop der eeuwen is verzameld, hoe wonderlijk deze wereld is en ook hoe groots de mensheid is in het op dit vlak beschrijven van de wereld.
Het is wederom Oliver Sacks zijn enthousiasme die mij verder heeft doen lezen over een onderwerp waarvan ik nooit gedacht had me daar nog eens wat in te gaan verdiepen. Dat uiteindelijk niet zo heel veel van Oliver Sacks zijn eigen leven wordt prijs gegeven is daardoor lang niet zo teleurstellend als dat ik gedacht had. Een aanrader voor wie het leven chemisch wil bekijken maar ook die geïnteresseerd is in de jeugd en bijzondere familie waarin Oliver Sacks is opgegroeid.… (meer)
