Arguably one of the most influential comic book artists, Alex Toth deserves mention alongside luminaries [a:Jack Kirby|10299|Jack Kirby|http://photo.goodreads.com/authors/1206594751p2/10299.jpg], [a:Will Eisner|1642|Will Eisner|http://photo.goodreads.com/authors/1202618782p2/1642.jpg], and [a:Harvey Kurtzman|80542|Harvey Kurtzman|http://www.goodreads.com/images/nophoto/nophoto-U-50x66.jpg]. His works informed the DC house style for better than a quarter of a century. Though the Simon/Kirby tandem invented the romance comic, Toth's vision stands at the iconic view of the genre. Setting the Standard collects Toth's entire 62 story output for obscure publisher Standard Comics. These over 400 pages of crime, horror, romance, science fiction, and war tales showcase some of his finest works, typifying his mastery of design, graphics, and visual narrative. As he did with the excellent [b:Four Color Fear|7093594|Four Color Fear Forgotten Horror Comics of the 1950s|John Benson|http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/61pbGZOEezL._SL75_.jpg|7350182] and [b:Supermen!|3580652|Supermen! Editor/designer Greg Sadowski returns to his tireless exploration of the comic book with this magnificent collection of 176 full color covers, dating from the Golden Age. As in his previous volumes ([b:Supermen!|3580652|Supermen! The First Wave of Comic Book Heroes, 1936-1941|Greg Sadowski|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1266726192s/3580652.jpg|3622903], [b:Four Color Fear|7093594|Four Color Fear Forgotten Horror Comics of the 1950s|Greg Sadowski|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1327890710s/7093594.jpg|7350182], [b:Setting the Standard|9900410|Setting the Standard|Alex Toth|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1327890644s/9900410.jpg|14792644] ), Sadowski supplies copious end notes and annotations. Though this time, the information additionally reads as an entertaining history of early comics. Perhaps the book's only flaws rest in the lack of an index and that the annotations might better serve the subject if printed alongside the images. Sadowski once again delivers an essential book for anyone with an interest in comics history.… (meer)

Romantipp dazu: «The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay» von Michael Chabon.

Some nice cover and decent writeups of the comics chosen. Can't say I'd want to own it, but it was worth a flip through. A few really wonderful pieces that i wouldn't have put with the Golden Age, but then a lot of pieces that just weren't that interesting.

The artists that particularly stood out: Frank Paul's Superworld Comics cover, Gus Ricca's pieces, and L.B Cole's stuff. (Some good stuff by more traditional comic artists such as Kirby and Eisner is in there as well.)
