Loved the illustrations and the careful explanation of how a combination of science, passion and hard work lead to the reunification of a lost Orca and her main pod. Particularly loved that the commission took community input into account when deciding how to help Springer. Also appreciated the respectful depiction of Native culture and the acknowledgement that Indigenous communication played a role in welcoming and reuniting the whales.

Springer was a young orca whale discovered lost and alone in the Puget Sound, 300 miles away from her family. It took dozens of scientists, vets, researchers and whale activists from the US and Canada to work together on her rescue and reunion. This compelling work combines narrative of the rescue with orca facts so readers have a fuller picture of the killer whale and can appreciate the nuances of what was a highly sensitive rescue. An inspiring page-turner especially for whale and animal lovers.… (meer)

a sweet, happy ending true story of an orphaned and lost whale who was found by humans and (once determined to be healthy) brought back to her pod. it involved two countries (the united states and canada) having to collaborate and work together, and is a testament to getting things accomplished (and quickly) when needed. it's the first known instance of a whale being reunited with a family, and happily the family took her back in. it's illustrated with lovely, soft, images and the story is interspersed with information about whales and science to round out the reading experience.… (meer)

This book discusses the best and worst of humanity but focuses on the best. It is the true story of how a lost young whale was found in Puget Sound and the United States and Canada had to join forces to get the whale back to his family 400 miles away. There are sections that pause to give orca facts or history on capturing whales for entertainment. The end of the book discusses threats to whales and how to help. It's a fascinating story. I am impressed that scientists were able to find Springer's family.… (meer)
