Korte biografie
Mollie Dorsey Sanford was born in Rising Sun, Indiana. When she was a teenager, her family moved to Nebraska City, Nebraska, where she started a diary. In 1860, she married Byron Sanford after a nearly three-year engagement, during which time she worked as a seamstress, teacher, and cook. Shortly after their marriage, they went by oxen-drawn wagon across the plains to settle in the Colorado Territory, a journey of about eight weeks. Her diary was later published as Mollie: The Journal of Mollie Dorsey Sanford in Nebraska and Colorado Territories 1857 to 1866. It's considered an important document of Western American history and one of the most vivid and accurate portrayals of life on the 19th-century American frontier. The book is on the reading lists in American History classes at many high schools and colleges.

I began reading this book last summer, as I biked through Nebraska. It was very interesting to read a true account of the area's history while I was in it. I was surprised at how much I could relate to Mollie, particularly in the first half of her journal, which details her every day life. Her stories were often very amusing, especially the ones that involved boys who wished to court her.

Because it is a journal, it doesn't flow as well as if it were a novel, and halfway through I stopped reading, but picked it up about 6 months later to finish, and it felt like I had never stopped reading. Mollie mentions that she wished to be a writer at times, and some of her poems are included. I'm not a fan of poems, but mention it only to say that she truly did have a gift for writing, so this isn't like reading just any girl's journal.… (meer)

I've read several other diary/journal volumes from the mid 1800s USA, but found this one to be particularly enjoyable. The author started writing down her thoughts and experiences at age 14 when her family moved from Indiana to Nebraska, and continued it into her adulthood, marriage, and beyond. It's not only well-written, literate, but also it sheds more light upon the mores of the time period. The author also includes a few of her own attempts at poetry, which I thought were pretty good. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who has a passing interest in history.… (meer)
